Le Thua Tien is an artist whose life and work is steeped in memory. Born in the ancient capital of Hue, a land of royal majestic history ravaged by time and war, Tien's wor is a ponderance of remembrance past.
Introspective by nature, Tien's works are studies of memory and contemplation. Though his works in very diverse mediums, including painting, installation, sculpture and community based art projects, all of the artists' creations are deeply spiritual and emit a sense of devine.
Tien's most recent works are mixed media and lacquer, in which the artist uses a traditional Vietnamese medium with a rich historical past in very new and innovative ways. Utilizing found objects, marble dust, silver leaf, incense sticks, copper, bronze, the artist gives the lacquer medium new life and meaning by altering context and structure.
He creates large empty sculpted spaces, chromatically simple, and yet richly textured all harking back to a lost space in time and history. Evocative of the ancient ruins of all epochs, avernous passages of layered lacquer, polished to a high sheen, emit a ghostly light that draws the viewers into a dialogue between the work and self. Meditations on a sense of wonder of the majesty of time and what remains.
Le Thua Tien has exhibited widely internationally as well as within Vietnam and has attended residencies in Australia, Cambodia, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands and the USA. His works are in the permanent collections of collectors worldwide and in public collections in Japan, the Netherlands and Vietnam.
